green river float

so i finally got that canoe i bought this spring in the water. a co worker and i went over to green river utah for a 70 mile float down the green river to the mineral bottom take-out. 12 boats total, and 23 people in the mix. yes, it turned into a cf at times, but on the whole everyone worked very well together and things ran surprisingly smooth. this group has been doing this trip every spring for the last 8 years and have it pretty down. i was super lucky to tag along and learn a few things that will apply to some solo river adventures this summer.

at the put in - green river utah.

some geyser that wouldn't geys while we were there. oh well.

we found campsites by paddling up small streams that feed into the river. this is the first day's campsite, taken in the morning. i didn't take any pictures the night before because i passed out at 6 p.m. from drinking scotch and modelo especial.

on the way back to the river on day two.

some dude who'd never been in a kayak before. he did pretty well.

campsite no. 2.

maybe my best photo of the trip.

entertainment. we hauled a 28lb fire pan in the bottom of my boat and lugged into camp each night for cooking and socializing.

most of the float we tied the boats together and just drifted. looked around. played a game we called "haiku in the round". fished for these a bit. swam. drank a lot of beer. listened to a lot of frank zappa. you know, that sort of thing.

camp no. 3. the group got split in half on the river due to some stragglers and mis-communication. no worries though, everyone had what they needed to get through the night. we had the bonus horseshoes though, for supplemental entertainment. there is something sweet about the sound of a ringer.

looks like a great trip. something about waking up on the river in the morning makes all your worries go away.

What a lot of fun. I'd like to do something like that. What kind of canoe did you get?
