so i had to work last night at a neighborhood meeting. of course that meant i skipped out of the office mid-afternoon and rode the 'cross bike for a couple hours. purty good. but the meeting (and the rampant ignorance displayed at said meeting) is what this post is about.
ok - there's this new KB homes subdivision coming into the fort (they suck, but they own the land ... damn property rights) that is actually the 3rd phase of an existing development. they are proposing somewhere around 590 new homes, so its pretty big. anyway, the neighbors (yes, NIMBY's) in the existing neighborhood are going apoplectic over the whole deal. "we can't handle that much density." "the affordable housing component will bring crime and lower our property values." "all that extra traffic is gonna kill a kid every day." "I was told that the next phase would be single family detached." and on and on.
now don't get me wrong, i'm no fan of ANY national builder, especially when they are of the ilk of KB. but for christ sakes, these people are bitching about a). a proposal that is only slightly higher density (like 1/2 a house an acre) than what they are living in. b) they are only going to build approx. 30 "affordable housing" units, which in fort collins means they would have scum bag neighbors who have, oh i don't know, jobs as transportation planners and such (ie. my income bracket) living around them and c). traffic and development that they new was coming. afterall, they live in the second phase of 3 .... hmmmm. did you think that big old field behind your house was going to be empty forever? maybe this post should be called selective recall ... i don't know. whatever, either way i'm glad that i wasn't the target of their consternation ... save that for the mf'ing representative from KB. i think that guy probably goes to a meeting like that every night. he actually said that he "gets all the communities confused" ... wow, i wonder if thats because all of your product is exactly the same? and i tell ya what man, that really goes a long way for public relations. dipshit. all around it was a pathetic display by all parties. all i want to do is get a new bike path built through there .... and KB don't know it yet but they are going to do it.
35 degrees this a.m. on the ride in to work. i gotta start wearing warmer socks.
you guys ever seen this?

Funny post, but I guess funny might not be the right word. Like the comments on the NIMBY's. Shit don't, want any people of middle incomes in our neighborhood. That might include some colored folks and they are always breaking the law!
hey man, just got to this blog today.
Some good stuff in here--keep up the good work! Sorry to hear about your race last weekend--you'll rock next time.
seth
KB rocks, man. did you notice that they all wear the same tie? coincidence?
there was a project slated up in fishtown that was nixed cause the neighborhood wasn't informed of (or lost track of) every single meeting. PHA (i think) was even going to have the site cleaned of all its TOXIC WASTE in order to seal the deal. the residents (headed by some genious of the local paper) barged in at the last meeting and had the project nixed. i don't know....toxic waste or neighbors. it IS a tough decision, even for fishtown grads.
take away one of those nixes and substitute it with a dropped (or something).
